Cinderella, and the other characters, think and speak in modern terms,
replacing the innocent mood of the original with the very hip and
knowing attitudes of today’s young people. The stepsisters are more boy
crazy than ugly; their mother more silly than cruel; and the prince is
so bashful and tongue-tied that he hides whenever a girl comes into
view. And Cinderella does wear combat boots to the ball—which is
delightfully consistent with the wacky, tongue-in-cheek, and continually
diverting style of this thoroughly charming short play.
